Owls are beautiful birds that are very useful in nature. They sleep during the day and are awake at night. There are 162 types of owls, and they live all over the world.

Owls are the only birds that have eyes that face forward in their head. This gives them binocular vision and they can see very well in the dark. Their eyes can’t rotate in their sockets, so they have to turn their head anytime they want to look in a different direction. But that’s no problem for an owl. They can rotate their head almost completely around because they have many more bones in their neck than humans do.

Here’s a great craft you can do using some very simple things you can find around the house!

Polly the Paper Plate Owl:

  1. For the owl’s head, take a paper plate and bend the top 1/3 over towards you.
  2. Cut two diagonal lines in the folded-over section and bend the owl’s tufts back up. Then glue down the flap – this will be the owl’s face.
  3. Glue the plastic eyes to the face (you can also use buttons for eyes, or just draw them with a marker).
  4. Cut a carrot-shaped cone out of your construction paper. This will be the owl’s beak.  Glue it to the owl’s face, between and just under it’s eyes.
  5. Glue another paper plate to the bottom of the owl’s face. This will be it’s body.
  6. Cut the third paper plate in half. This will make the owl’s wings.
  7. Glue on it’s wings at an angle
  8. Cut out two V-shaped pieces out of construction paper. Glue them on to the bottom of the owl’s body. These will be the owl’s feet.
  9. Color feather’s on your owl with your crayons, markers or with paint.
