Remember that God promised to multiply Abraham’s descendants like the sands of the sea? That’s a lot of descendants, isn’t it? Here’s a good way to remember that promise!
What You Need:
  • Newspaper
  • Sand
  • Water
  • Food Coloring
  • Paper towels
  • Small Glass, metal or paper bowls or cups
  • Small Funnel
  • Small stick
  • Glass bottle or small jar
What You Do:
  1. Find a place where you can spread out. It needs to be somewhere out of the way, because this craft takes a while. (In other words, don’t do this at your kitchen table!) Spread out your newspaper so you don’t get food coloring on anything you shouldn’t!
  2. Set out your bowls on the newspaper. You will need one bowl for each of the colors you want to make.
  3. Put some sand into each one of your bowls and add just enough water to cover the sand.
  4. Add generous amounts of food coloring to each bowl, mixing the food coloring to make the color you want. (Remember that if you add all the colors you’ll end up with black, so it’s probably best to stick with bright colors!)
  5. Stir the sand and the color up and put it aside until the sand has absorbed the coloring (this may take a while).
  6. When your sand is the color you want, drain the extra water off and put the sand onto paper towels to dry.
  7. Using the funnel, take some of the dried colored sand and add a layer to the bottom of the bottle.
  8. Use your small stick to make a few bumps and waves along the edges of the sand.
  9. Repeat using the different colors of sand, and making designs along the edges with each layer (be careful not to mix your layers).
  10. Press the sand down firmly and screw on the cap.
  11. Clean up the newspapers and wash out your bowls. (Don’t leave a mess, because your parents won’t appreciate it!)
  12. If you want, you can write a message on the outside of your bottle with a permanent marker. I put my name and the date on my bottle, but you can write whatever you want!
