Hey, check this out! Here’s a great idea for making a great bookmark with colored rice! Make sure you cover your surface with lots of newspapers. Don’t make mom mad by getting glue and food coloring on the table, ok? (And make sure you clean up the mess when you’re done!)
Of course, if you want to make a greeting card, or even a poster, just let your imagination go wild! You can use beans, small pasta pieces, whatever you like!

What You Need:
|
|
|
you’ll need just a little bit of rice for each color (more for bigger projects)
if you don’t want to use rice, try several different colors of lentils or very small beans – but use these in their natural state. Don’t try to color them.
- food coloring
- small glass bowl
- white vinegar
- cookie sheet
- aluminum foil or parchment paper
- thin cardboard
- pencil
- non-toxic glue

What You Do:
|
|
|
- Prepare cookie sheet by covering it in aluminum foil or parchment paper. Set aside.
- Place a small bit of rice into a glass bowl and add several drops of food color and ½ tsp of vinegar. Mix well to coat the grains with color. Use more food color if you want the colors to be brighter.
- Carefully spread the rice on the cookie sheet, leaving room for the other colored batches.
- Mix another color into another batch of rice as above, and spread it on the cookie sheet. Keep the colors separate and keep it in a single layer.
- Bake the rice at 200° F for 45 minutes until the rice is dry. Then cool the rice and place each color in a small container.
- Cut out a 2x6-inch bookmark-sized strip of cardboard, and use your pencil to draw the design you want on it.
- Spread a thin layer of all-purpose glue on a small portion of the the cardboard strip, then use tweezers to place the colors you want within the patterns you’ve drawn. Add more glue as you go, and keep adding different colored grains to make an interesting mosaic pattern.
- Let your bookmark dry thoroughly, then carefully lay it between layers of clear contact paper. Trim the edges and enjoy your new bookmark!
