In Old Testament times baking bread was pretty much an every day event! Although the ingredients have changed a bit, their bread may have looked like our modern flatbread, and we think you'll agree, it tastes so good!

Remember, please have an adult help you with this recipe, okay?

  What you need:
  • a small bowl
  • 2 large bowls
  • plastic wrap
  • 1½ c. warm water (not hot, just warm)
  • 1 Tbsp. pure cane sugar
  • 1 (.25 oz.) pkg. active dry yeast (or 2½ teaspoons)
  • 3 c. unbleached bread or all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • cooking spray

Optional: Italian seasoning, basil, Roma tomato slices, minced garlic, fresh mushrooms, grated soy “cheese,” or other herbs for toppings.
  What you do:
  1. Mix the sugar and warm water in your small bowl, then mix in the yeast and let it stand for 10 minutes.
  2. Combine the flour, yeast, and add the salt, mixing it all in your large bowl.
  3. Stir it well, then turn it onto a floured surface to kneed for about 10 minutes.
  4. Slowly add a little more flour until your dough is not sticky.
  5. Spray the other large bowl well with cooking spray, then place your dough into it, and cover it with plastic wrap. Put it in a warm place until it’s doubled in size (about 60 to 90 minutes).
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190° C).
  7. Spray a large pizza pan or baking sheet with cooking spray.
  8. Punch the dough down, and place it on the pan, using your fingers to spread out the dough.
  9. Make dimples in the dough with your fingertips, then drizzle a little olive oil on the loaf.
  10. Add any optional toppings of your choice.
  11. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Let it cool, then cut it into wedges and enjoy!
