Have you noticed how many different types of leaves there are? Plants and trees of all kinds have unique and interesting leaves. Wanna keep track of them? We’ll show you how, and even tell you how you can make some cool leaf skeletons!
  What You Need:
  • old telephone book
  • a small spiralbound notebook
  • glue
  • leaves of different colors, shapes and sizes (two of each)
  • a newspaper
  • an old shoe brush (or something similar) to pound with
  What You Do:

Drying your leaves:
1. Pick two of the same-sized leaves off plants and trees. Try to find a wide variety of
them.

2. Place two of the same kind of leaves between the pages of your old phone book. Skip some pages before placing more leaves there.

3. Place the phone book in a warm, dry place for three days or until your leaves are dry. Place something heavy on the book to make sure your leaves dry flat.

Mounting your leaves:
1. In your small spiral-bound notebook, glue two leaves on every page (or on opposing pages) – one top side up, the other bottom side up.

2. If you know the name of the tree or plant it came from, write it on the page. You can also add it’s location.

Making a Leaf Skeleton:
1.Collect some fresh tree leaves.

2. Place one leaf at a time on top of the entire newspaper. Pound the leaf with your brush (or similar instrument) but don’t pound so hard you tear the leaf. Just hit it enough to wear away the soft green leaf material between the leaf veins.

3. Dry the leaf “skeleton” between the pages of your old phone book (see above).

4. Glue a layer of brown paper (a brown paper bag will do) around your notebook.

5. Glue some dried flowers, twigs, and the leaf “skeletons” to your cover.
