Here in North America, October is traditionally our harvest time, and pumpkins are everywhere! We love pumpkin pies, pumpkin bread, and even pumpkin soup! And what could be more fun than making some pumpkins of your own out of salt dough?
  What You Need:
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • paintbrush
  • orange acrylic paint
  • gold glitter paint
  • 2 green toothpicks

Note: If you’re making tiny pumpkins, you can cut this recipe in half. If you want to make bigger ones, you can double it. This dough is not edible, but it won’t hurt you—it just won’t taste good!
  What You Do:
  1. Preheat your oven to 250° F.
  2. Mix the flour, salt and water together.
  3. Spread a thin layer of flour on a hard surface and knead the dough until it’s smooth and stretchy. If your dough is still too sticky, sprinkle a bit of flour on it until the stickiness is gone—but go easy! Don’t add too much flour or your dough will become dry and cracked before you bake it!
  4. Roll your dough in your hands, and make several different-sized balls. Then place them on a cookie sheet (no grease!), making sure they’re touching, so they make one piece after they bake.
  5. Use a toothpick to draw vertical lines on your “pumpkins,” and then break your toothpicks in half and insert them into the top to make “stems.” Be sure to do this BEFORE you put them in the oven!
  6. Bake your “pumpkins” for 2 – 2.5 hours. Carefully remove them from the oven and let them cool overnight. (Be careful, you can get burned if you touch them too soon)!
  7. The next day your “pumpkins” are ready to be painted. You’ll want to give them two or three coats of orange paint, but let each coat dry first. When the last orange coat is dry, use some gold glitter paint or glitter glue to add some sparkle! Let them dry thoroughly, and place them on a few pretty-colored autumn leaves as a centerpiece on your dinner table. It’s a great idea for Thanksgiving day, too—and you can always use it next year!
