Here's an easy way to make all sorts of shapes. Since it's fall here in North America, we thought you might want to make Fall colored leaves. You can make these into magnets, or even hang them in a window. You can even spread them around a centerpiece on your holiday table.
  Here's what you need:
  • acrylic paint - we used red, green, orange, brown and yellow
  • paint brush
  • acrylic spray sealer
  • leaf shaped cookie cutters (or any other shape you like!)
Salt Dough recipe (Don't eat this!)
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 1/2 cup of water
  Here's what you do:
  1. Pre-heat your oven to 250°F.
  2. Mix your ingredients together for your dough. Depending on how many you want to make, you can either halve or double the recipe.
  3. Kneed your dough on a floured surface until it's smooth. If it's too sticky, add some more flour, but don't add too much because it will dry out too soon.
  4. Use a roller to make the dough about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Use different sized cookie cutters to make different shapes.
  6. Place your leaves (or other shapes) on a cookie sheet and put them in the oven. Bake them for 2 hours.
  7. Remove them from the oven, and make sure you let them cool completely.
  8. Brush on your acrylic paints, then spray them with your acrylic sealer when they're dry.
(Options: If you want to make refrigerator magnets out of them, glue magnets to the back with a hot glue gun. You could also glue a peace of string to them and hang them  in a window. How about just spreading some fall leaves around the centerpiece for dinner around the holidays? You really can make all kinds of fun things out of the salt dough. So use your imagination!).
CAUTIONS: Please have an adult help you with the oven. If you are using a hot glue gun, please make sure an adult is with you there, too.
